Calculations of results in grazing experiments using the counting method OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Van de Vrie, E.M..
Different formulae used in the literature for calculation of ingestion rates are reviewed. Their applicability is discussed in relation to two criteria: the occurrence of saturation of the feeding and/or growth of the food particles. It is shown by simulations that the differences in results obtained by calculating ingestion following a linear or an exponential model are restricted to a few percent. Calculation of ingestion rates by substantial over- or underestimation depending on the growth constant of the food particles and the grazing time. The formula I = Vk(CztCzoekt)/N(I-ekt) is proposed for the calculation of ingestion rates under saturated circumstances.It...

Determination of seasonal phytoplankton communities, based on quantitative data using a mathematical analysis OMA
Caljon, A..
The definition of algal communities has always been a very discussed subject. We applied a principal component analysis on quantitative phytoplankton data. This ordination technique made it possible to distinguish the algal groups present. This technique is very often applied in the phytosociology of higher plants but less frequently in the phytosociology of algae. Till now this ordination has been used in phycology, merely for marine- and freshwater benthic algae, e.g. the benthic diatoms of rivers (Descy 1976a, b).

Evolution of bacterial communities precipitating carbonate, in Mediterranean lagoons water and sediment: Study on experimental conditions. ArchiMer
Castanier, S; Maurin, A; Bianchi, A.
To determine if carbonate precipitation is an active or passive bacterial phenomena, factorial analysis has been realized with 880 strains isolated from different samples of sea water and muds kept in various conditions of incubation. Results show the existence of a strong anti-correlation between carbonate precipitation and amino-acid ammonification. Carbonate precipitation is not a passive phenomena linked with amino-acid ammonification.

Maximum Empirical Likelihood: Empty Set Problem AgEcon
Grendar, Marian; Judge, George G..
In the Empirical Estimating Equations (E^3) approach to estimation and inference estimating equations are replaced by their data-dependent empirical counterparts. It is odd but with E^3 there are models where the E^3-based estimator does not exist for some data set, and does exist for others. This depends on whether or not a set of data-supported probability mass functions that satisfy the empirical estimating equations is empty for the data set. In a finite sample context, this unnoted feature invalidates methods of estimation and inference, such as the Maximum Empirical Likelihood, that operate within E^3. The empty set problem of E^3 is illustrated by several examples and possible remedies are discussed.

Modelo de regresión lineal múltiple para determinar influencias del índice Niño 1+2 y la MJO sobre las precipitaciones en Guayaquil durante enero-febrero-marzo y abril OceanDocs
Nieto, J.J..
There were elaborated multiple linear regression models to determine the adjustment degree of niño 1+2 and Madden-Julian Oscillation indexes with the accumulated precipitation in Guayaquil, for january, february, march, and april. The correlation models were built separately for each month with time series from 1978 to 2004 of monthly accumulated precipitation, niño 1+2 anomaly, and Madden-Julian Oscillation index for 120W, with a significance level of 95%. It was found that for january, march, and april the linear correlation adjust with coefficients R2 of 0.80, 0.77, and 0.82 respectively. The precipitation levels for february does not showed significant correlation with the indexes, it seems to respond to other factors, presumably atmospheric. There...
